What is the LPI Certification?

The LPI certification is a vendor-neutral Linux credential that measures critical Linux system and Network administration skills. LPI prides itself on statistically valid exams and provides a quality testing experience for candidates around the globe.

What is the target audience for LPI Training?

The LPI course is designed for anyone responsible for providing installation, operation, troubleshooting and administration services on Linux workstations and servers and for Microsoft professionals seeking to add Linux expertise.

What are the Pre-requisites for attending a LPIC 1 (LPI 101 or LPI 102) course?

The LPIC 1 is designed for students with 1-2 years of Linux experience that are interested in passing the LPI 101 and 102 exams. A general understanding of Linux System Administration tasks is helpful but not required. Delegates should be comfortable using a text editor such as "Vi".

What are the Pre-requisites for attending a LPIC 2 (LPI 201 or LPI 202) course?

You must have an active LPIC-1 certification to receive LPIC-2 certification, but the LPIC-1 and LPIC-2 exams may be taken in any order.

What are the Pre-requisites for attending a LPIC 3 (LPI 301 or LPI 302) course?

You must have an active LPIC-2 certification to receive LPIC-3 certification, but the LPIC-2 and LPIC-3 exams may be taken in any order.

Can I pass the exam without attending a training course?

Depending on your level of knowledge and your commitment to study there is no reason why an individual would not pass. LPI training is a fast track process that focuses on the needs and requirements of the LPI program.

What books or texts are available to help me study for my certification?

Will I be guaranteed a pass on the LPI course?

LPI is an industry recognized certification, as such the exam is designed to test candidates so that the expectations that employers may associate with an industry qualification are met. A candidates ability to pass is like all such industry exams, it will depend on the candidates ability to comprehend and retain the knowledge transferred to them.

Will I be guaranteed a job if I achieve the LPIC certification?

UK-LPI will not guarantee employment if a candidate achieves any of the LPIC Certifications. However having a certification that is an industry recognized certification will improve a candidates potential to earn and gain employment.

How many questions will I be asked?

As of December, 2007, all exams have 60 questions except 301 (it has 50).

What time do I have to complete the exam?

All LPIC exams are 90 minutes each, unless they are taking one with pilot items. Then, it's 120 minutes. Ubuntu Level 1 is 60 minutes.

What is the average pass rate for LPIC exams?

LPI pass rates varies depending on exam level and the publishing date of the exam. However, the pass rate generally falls within the industry standard of 70%.

If I fail an exam how soon can I re-sit the exam?

Anyone who takes an LPI exam once must wait one week before re-taking. Anyone who takes an LPI exam a second (and subsequent) time must wait 90 days before re-taking.

Once I pass the test, how long is the certification valid for?

Once a person is certified by LPI and receives a certification designation (LPIC-1, LPIC-2, LPIC-3), recertification is recommended after two years from the date of the certification designation to retain current certification status. However, to RETAIN an ACTIVE certification status, a certification holder is REQUIRED to recertify within 5 years of the certification designation.

How do I recertify?

Recertification requires that the individual candidate passes all up-to-date exams that are only required for the highest earned certification designation. After successful recertification, the designation status will be updated to ACTIVE for a period of FIVE years.

If I have a LPIC 2 or 3 and I do not recertify in 5 years do I revert to LPIC 1?

No. When a higher level certification designation is earned, the status of all lower level designations are considered ACTIVE for FIVE years from the date of the higher level certification designation. However, candidates who do not recertify and allow their certification status to lapse will be required to earn their current and all lower level certification designations, should they subsequently pursue reactivating their certification status.
